Amy Winehouse's New Songs Turned Down
Amy Winehouse has been told to return to the recording studio by her record company, after they rejected all her new material with its reggae sound.
The 25-year-old singer - who recently spent three months in the Caribbean on holiday and working on new material - has been told to return to the recording studio because label bosses don't like her new reggae sound.
A source said: "Amy was very productive during her stay in St. Lucia. She wrote a lot of songs, but the majority of them just aren't hitting the mark.
"She seems to have ditched her trademark vintage soul sound and is now heavily influenced by reggae. Her bosses don't think it's a wise move to change her style so sharply and have told her that."
The troubled star's demo tracks for her upcoming third album have also been criticised for being "very dark" compared to her previous hits.
The source explained: "The lyrics are very dark indeed. While she's known for her conversational style and has been very successful with it, many of the tracks are near the knuckle.
"In the past, she's written frequently about broken hearts and boyfriends, but this time round she's delving into harrowing terrain."
Bosses are determined to ensure Amy's upcoming album matches the success of her 2006 LP Back to Black.
The source added to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "It is crucial Amy's return is handled properly. If she puts out a record that is in any way half-baked, that could severely damage her long-term prospects, so everyone's focus at the minute is getting it right, even if that means telling Amy some things she probably won't want to hear."

Oscar winner Robin Williams is expected to make a complete recovery from his recent heart surgery in the next two months and plans to resume his comedy tour afterward, his representatives said on Monday.
Williams, 57, one of Hollywood's leading comedians and known for his manic stand-up routine steeped in wacky accents and improvisation, had surgery on March 13 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
"His heart is strong and he will have normal heart function in the coming weeks with no limitations on what he'll be able to do," Dr. A. Marc Gillinov, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the clinic, said in a statement.
The operation was done to replace Williams' aortic valve, repair his mitral valve and correct an irregular heartbeat.
Williams postponed his "Weapons of Self-Destruction" comedy tour earlier this month to undergo the procedure after complaining of shortness of breath.
He was in Florida at the time and was first treated at the University of Miami Hospital.
Williams plans to resume his comedy tour in the fall but no specific date has been set.
"I got some great new material for the tour and can't wait to get back on the road," Williams said in a statement.
"I'm thinking the next leg of the tour will be 'Weapons of Self-Destruction and Reconstruction!'"
The actor's older brother, Robert Todd Williams, died in 2007 of complications from heart surgery.
Williams won an Oscar for his supporting role as a psychologist in the 1997 drama "Good Will Hunting." More recently, he starred in the movie "License to Wed" in 2007 and the 2006 release "Man of the Year."

Captain Nico's Mandolin
Beijing-based The Dublingers are the most unlikely looking Irish band in the world. The creative combo is led by Frenchman Nico Torrese and made up of four other Chinese musicians. At first sight, the band would never be confused with the legendary Irish folk group The Dubliners.
But close your eyes, and their Irish sound is as authentic as can be making them very much in-demand for the St Patrick's Day celebrations.
Ireland's national day is traditionally celebrated on March 17 in pubs around the world with singing and dancing, stout and whiskey.
This year will be no different and The Dublingers expect to play at least five ceilidhs (Gaelic social gatherings) in five days, including the annual Irish Ball and the Wangfujing Irish Street Parade, which gives the band an official stamp of approval from events organizer the Irish Embassy.
"It's nice to be known," says Torrese (banjo, mandolin) who is also a member of acoustic jazz ensemble The No Name Trio, along with Wang Yi (accordion).
The other Dublingers are Zhang Yang (fiddle), Li Hong (bodhran and percussion) and Da Fei (guitar).
"Some time before St Patrick's Day last year some pub owner asked for Irish music and we were game, so we got some music and extra musicians," recalls the Frenchman who started the band.
The Dublingers have been gigging regularly on Beijing's pub circuit ever since and were even picked by the Irish tourism board to promote the nation at the Volvo Ocean Race in Qingdao, Shandong Province.
A Chinese Irish band isn't as strange as it sounds, Torrese says, adding musical authenticity is more important than nationality.
"There's no Irish in the band, but it's real Irish music," he says.
Torrese came to China five years ago for a new experience and first studied Chinese. Today he teaches guitar in Beijing and says he used to visit Ireland up to three times a year for more than a decade. He discovered ballads and reels by "standing around in pubs for hours listening to them".
"I had a band in France and we played Irish music in Ireland. Of course, it was fun and the reaction was really good. Irish audiences are very enthusiastic," he says.
"We work from authentic scores and it's only when Da Fei or I sing that we sound a little bit Chinese or French.
"Usually when we play, after an hour, there is someone from Ireland who will come up to the stage and sing some songs.
"With their Irish accents it sounds pretty good."
Da Fei, who imagines the Emerald Isle's rolling green fields when he plays guitar, says there is nothing dissonant about Chinese people playing Irish music.
"We live in an international society. A Chinese person playing the blues or Irish music isn't that special. Lots of Chinese like Irish music, so it's natural," he says.
Accordionist Wang Yi has been studying the instrument since she was four years old, when her parents decided on her musical path because they liked the teacher.
After graduating from Tianjin Conservatory of Music she went to France and studied with the renowned accordionist Frederic Deschamps.
She says Irish music is passionate and the structure is fairly simple, with similarities to Chinese music in terms of melody and chord structure.
Wang says she understands French culture a bit but has been developing a love for all things Irish since the Dublingers were formed.
"I didn't celebrate St Patrick's much before last year but I knew that Irish liked to get together and drink and wear green hats."
The last item makes her laugh because wearing a green hat in Chinese culture means that your partner is being unfaithful.
Torrese, who prefers Murphy's beer to Guinness and enjoys a drop of Bushmills whiskey, says the Dublingers are a break from teaching guitar and playing jazz, what he calls his "day job".
"Playing the mandolin and banjo is totally different, like a holiday. Of course I have to practice a lot, it's like sport, but it's good to have a break."
He says Chinese audiences appreciate Irish music because the ballads and melodies sound familiar.
"Then there are the faster songs, which have a lot of energy," he says.
"These kinds of songs don't really exist in Chinese music, but we get a pretty good response, people tap their feet and dance, especially after a few drinks."
Paddy O'Shea's publican and amateur musicologist Karl Logan has lined up the Dublingers to play at his Beijing bar.
Logan is very impressed by the band's Irish authenticity.
"Nico has been to Ireland and knows what he's doing," he says.
"It sounds fresh and well rehearsed to me. What might make them even better was a bit of improvisation - and the addition of a set of spoons."

Sometimes It’s Hard to Know When to Stop
An old man went to the doctor and began to pour
out his problems. As the doctor asked more
about what was the matter with him, the old
man said, “Well Doc, after I get to the first,
I’m very, very tired. After the second, I feel
all in. After the third, my heart begins to
pound. After the fourth, I break out in a cold
sweat. And after the fifth, I’m so exhausted,
I feel like I’m going to die, right then
and there!”
“That’s incredible,” said the doctor,
“but how old are you?”
“Eighty-five,” the patient said. And the
doctor said, “Well, at 85, why don’t you
stop at the first?” The man said, “I can’t
stop: I live on the fifth floor!”

Singer Rolling out More Hits in Japan
The 22-year-old Tibetan female performer Alan, pictured right, has recorded eight Japanese singles since she was signed by the country's leading record company Avex Trax. Her first Japanese album "Voice of Earth" was released last week.
Alan, who started taking traditional singing and erhu (a traditional musical instrument) lessons from a very young age, grew up in the so called "Beauty Valley" in China's Sichuan Province where her father is a public servant.
At age 10, Alan left home to enter the Sichuan Music School, attached to the junior high school, after ranking first in the erhu audition as a fourth grader. In 2003, she was accepted into the prestigious Chinese People's Liberation Army Artistic School's singing course in Beijing, the ultimate art level in China.
In April 2006, Alan distinguished herself from about 40,000 hopefuls when Avex Trax held auditions throughout China, becoming the company's first contracted artist from China.
She moved to Tokyo in September 2007 and in November that year, her first Japanese single "Ashita e no Sanka (A Song for Tomorrow)" was released. Alan's musical "Kazuhito Kikuchi" has generated countless hits and her songs have a theme of love and peace.
She was chosen to sing the theme song "Xin Zhan" of John Woo's monumental two-part epic "Red Cliff" and performed it at the Cannes Film Festival in May last year.
Q: What does your name mean in Tibetan language?A: My original name is Alan Dawa Dolma. "Dawa" means the moon in Tibetan and "Dolma" means fairy.
Q: Did you show a talent for singing during your childhood? A: Actually I was nothing but a naughty girl when I was a child, not to mention a gifted singer and dancer. Climbing trees, catching fish and beetles ... I was as energetic as a boy and even now I have tiny scars on my skin from that time. However, I do think that I was born with a sense of music. My grandma and mother both have beautiful voices and I have been a lover of music from early age. I studied playing erhu for 10 years and received vocal training since I was a sophomore in college. Now I keep improving my singing skills through weekly singing lessons.
Q: Have you enthusiastically counted down the days to the release of your album "Voice of Earth?"A: Of course, I am so excited! All the staff and I devote ourselves to the album. It is my great passion, just like my own baby. Besides eight former singles, there are seven new songs in the album. And we shot 11 music videos!
Q: As a Chinese girl, what do you think of carving out your career as a singer in Japan?A: I am proud of myself as a Sichuan native singer. I know how difficult it is for a foreigner to start out so I cherish the chance and believe I will do a good job!
Q: Is there any obvious difference between working in China and in Japan?A: In Japan, being punctual comes first. I stick to a more precise schedule and my schedule has been arranged till this August. Where to go today, when to set out, when to do interviews ... everything is written down in detail in my timetable. I feel more relaxed when working in China.
Q: You were chosen to sing the theme song of the two-episode Chinese blockbuster "Red Cliff" and involved in promotion at the Cannes Film Festival. What are your thoughts on the star-studded crew?A: I am extremely grateful to the director John Woo who gave me the chance. Besides Cannes, I attended premieres in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tokyo. I saw Woo being interviewed from morning to night, always keeping a modest demeanor. The actors and actresses were kind and I was lucky to be involved.
Q: You write your blogs in both Japanese and Chinese. What do you think of language learning?A: Studying Japanese is for survival. I have to break the language barrier to communicate when working in Japan and struggled a lot when starting to learn the language. And I was not available for systematic learning so I kept asking the Japanese staff and writing blogs in Japanese for practice. Now daily conversation is no longer a problem. And I am starting to learn English.
Q: What is your plan for 2009? Have you got any new projects?A: The year 2009 will be another year for more challenges! I will try writing lyrics and composing. I am ready to perform in live concerts and I will learn dancing.
Q: What do you think about those online comments to you?A: I always have a fond regard for ordinary people. I thank so many Netizens and my fans who send me warm greetings and comments.
Q: If you get a chance to live a life of your own choosing, what would you want to do?A: Running a restaurant serving authentic Sichuan food in Tokyo! I like Sichuan-style spicy food so I could enjoy my hometown food every day.
Q: What is your love in daily life?A: I love pets and animals. I have a dog named Bobi but work occupies my whole life and I hardly have time to play with it.

Anger Can Really Kill You: Study
Anger Can Really Kill You: Study
Anger and other strong emotions can trigger potentially deadly heart rhythms in certain vulnerable people, US researchers said recently.
Previous studies have shown that earthquakes, war or even the loss of a World Cup Soccer match can increase rates of death from sudden cardiac arrest, in which the heart stops circulating blood.
"It's definitely been shown in all different ways that when you put a whole population under a stressor that sudden death will increase," said Dr. Rachel Lampert of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, whose study appears in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
"Our study starts to look at how does this really affect the electrical system of the heart," Lampert said.
She and colleagues studied 62 patients with heart disease and implantable heart defibrillators or ICDs that can detect dangerous heart rhythms or arrhythmias and deliver an electrical shock to restore a normal heart beat.
"These were people we know already had some vulnerability to arrhythmia," Lampert said in a telephone interview.
Patients in the study took part in an exercise in which they recounted a recent angry episode while Lampert's team did a test called T-Wave Alternans that measures electrical instability in the heart.
Lampert said the team specifically asked questions to get people to relive the angry episode. "We found in the lab setting that yes, anger did increase this electrical instability in these patients," she said.
Next, they followed patients for three years to see which patients later had a cardiac arrest and needed a shock from their implantable defibrillator.
"The people who had the highest anger-induced electrical instability were 10 times more likely than everyone else to have an arrhythmia in follow-up," she said.
Lampert said the study suggests that anger can be deadly, at least for people who are already vulnerable to this type of electrical disturbance in the heart.
"It says yes, anger really does impact the heart's electrical system in very specific ways that can lead to sudden death," she said.

John Mayer's Online Love Vote about Aniston
John Mayer voted for himself in an online poll asking whether Jennifer Aniston should stay with him.
The 'Gravity' singer - who has been dating the actress for around a year - couldn't resist having his say when he saw a US website asking 'Is John Mayer a Keeper?'.
He wrote on his Twitter blog page: "I just voted on People's 'Is John Mayer a Keeper?' poll - I clicked 'Love Him'.
"Be honest, you'd vote for yourself if you came across it, as well. Wouldn't you?"
John's vote was much needed as at the time 63 per cent of respondents were urging Jennifer to "lose him".
Jennifer, 40, and John made a rare public appearance together at the Oscars on February 22.
The 31-year-old musician has said he accompanied his girlfriend to the ceremony for "moral support" as she was presenting an award in front of an audience including her ex-husband Brad Pitt and his partner Angelina Jolie.
John said: "I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood for one night. You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation. And she did, and it was really great."

Gillian Cheung Walks out of Scandal Shadow
Gillian Cheung was all tears and full of remorse when she first spoke out about the sex photo scandal publicly during an exclusive interview with TVB host Stephan Chan in Hong Kong on Thursday night.
Hong Kong entertainer Gillian Cheung received an exclusive interview with TVB show program 'By My Guest' and first spoke out about the sex photo scandal publicly
Gillian Cheung was all tears and full of remorse when she first spoke out about the sex photo scandal publicly during an exclusive interview with TVB host Stephan Chan in Hong Kong on Thursday night.Snippets of the recording and script from the hour long interview were soon circulated via various media outlets and caused a big splash by early this morning. The actress disclosed she once thought of taking her own life after the scandal became known, which apparently derailed her promising career and threw her in an extreme state of shame for a whole year. However, Gillian Cheung pulled herself back from the brink when she realized having thoughts of suicide would only leave troubles and grief for her family and friends to deal with. She says it's the support of family which helped her out of that 'lost' period.Instead of venting her anger she remained calm during the interview, appearing to be at great peace with herself. As much as she has endured, the actress says she harbours no ill feeling for her ex, Edison Chan, but can not figure out why he did not apologize to her in person after the scandal broke. That's also what Cecilia Cheung, another victim of the scandal, pointed out in a recent interview. The actress also confessed she was deeply in love with Edison Chan and "didn't want to lose it". That answers why she took such intimate photos with him. However, Cheung bluntly says she does not want to see him again, adding "it is over".The actress stressed dignity is the most important thing for her.During the interview, they also touched upon her favourite film making experience. That is 'Beyond Our Ken', a 2004 Hong Kong film starring Gillian Cheung and Daniel Wu. The story centres on Ching (Gillian Chung), who is dumped by her playboy boyfriend Ken (Daniel Wu). After dumping her, Ken allegedly uploads nude photos of Ching to a website. Ken apparently has a hobby of taking nude pictures of his girlfriends.Cheung finds it has so many similarities with her real life.Mani, the actress' agent, addressed the media to say, "The interview has helped Gillian Cheung relieve some of her stress which was there for such a long time and she is now in good spirits."Mani recalled the dark times the actress managed to pull through and hoped Cheung would bring a positive attitude to her future work, prove herself and be identified again for the right reasons.Charlene Choi, the 'Twins' partner, also said in response to the scandal that she was quite happy to see Gillian now stand up to face herself and the public.
Godfather of All Lawsuits
Hollywood legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are teaming up in a lawsuit against a movie distributor and a watch company they say used their likenesses without permission.
In papers filed in a New York court on Thursday, the two Oscar-winning actors sought unspecified damages, saying they had never authorized a commercial tie-in between Tutima watches and their recent movie Righteous Kill.
The movie was distributed by Overture Films, which is a co-defendant with Tutima.
In a statement, Overture said: "We are surprised by this action as Overture Films has not received any communication on this matter for months from Pacino, De Niro or their representatives. We take lawsuits very seriously and our legal team is addressing the issue."
The lawsuit said Overture entered into a commercial tie-in with Tutima and advertised their watches using De Niro's and Pacino's names, voices and likenesses without their consent.
"Had their permission been sought, both De Niro and Pacino would have flatly refused to consent to the use of their names, voices and/or likenesses in connection with the tie-in," the lawsuit said.
It said Pacino had never commercially endorsed any product or service in the United States, while De Niro had only done so under very "specific and compelling circumstances".
The two New York-born actors have appeared together in several movies since first co-starring in The Godfather: Part II in 1976.

A Wild Guess
Our physics professor was struggling to draw the class into discussion of Archimedes' principle of water displacement. He told us' that Archimedes noticed that when he got into a pool at the public bathhouse, the water rose spilling over the edge. Excited at his discovery, he ran down the street yelling, "Eureka, eureka!" The instructor asked if anyone knew what that meant.
One student stood up and answered, "I'm naked ! I'm naked!"
Until They're Free
Deciding to do some back-yard landscaping, my father-in-law went to the brickyard to buy quantity of brick. When he asked the salesclerk about the cost, the man replied. "The more you buy, the cheaper they are."
"'is that so?" said my father-in-law." Then just keep loading them on my truck until they're free.
